A tableful of dead Drosophila, three thousand
flies, more or less, to sort by sex, eye-color,
bristle-length and shape of wing. An orphan
dozen could have disappeared—window open, or door,
an errant breeze—the numbers then would be
a perfect fit for theory. The four of us
discussed it—and let the data stand. Heedless
of apologiae, our proposed interpretation, he graded us C-minus.
Everybody knew, then, the smallest unit
of heredity to the single gene, indivisible.
Not even our professor had a clue
that intra-gene recombination might be possible.
For that "A," we should have done what Mendel did—
crack a window; smooth the data ‘til it fit.
